Practice for your job interview: questions and the STAR method
You know most interview questions in advance. What you should practice is not the wording but the structure of your answers. With ten typical questions and the STAR method you are prepared.

Ten questions you can expect
For each question a note on what matters.
- Tell us about yourself. Two minutes, a thread from your experience to the role.
- Why do you want to work here? A concrete reference to the company, not “because you are a leader”.
- Why this role? How the tasks and your strengths fit together.
- What are your strengths? Two, each with an example.
- And your weaknesses? A real one, with what you do about it.
- Describe a difficult situation. A STAR example with a result.
- How do you handle conflicts? One concrete case, your part, the outcome.
- Where do you see yourself in five years? Direction rather than title; show interest in growing within the role.
- What are your salary expectations? A range, justified by experience and market.
- Do you have questions for us? Two or three prepared ones, such as team, onboarding, first tasks.
The STAR method for convincing answers
STAR gives your examples a frame. That way you stay concrete and get to the point.
Situation
Context in one or two sentences: where, when, what was the starting point?
Task
What was your assignment, what was at stake?
Action
What did you concretely do? Say “I”, not “we”, even if a team was involved.
Result
What came out of it? With a number if possible, otherwise a clear effect. And what did you learn?
A practice plan in three steps
Prepare examples
Create one STAR example for each requirement in the posting. Five or six examples cover most questions.
Practice aloud and record
Say the answers aloud, record them and listen back. You notice immediately where you ramble.
Test with a counterpart
Practice with a person or with an AI mock interview for the specific job. Repeat after the feedback.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an answer take?
Usually one to two minutes. If more is wanted, your counterpart will ask.
May I bring notes?
Usually yes, especially for your questions to the company. In a video call use them openly and do not read them out.
How do I prepare for technical questions?
Go through the requirements in the posting and think about how you would explain each in two minutes. The mock interview asks you such questions.
