ChatGPT & cover letters
Writing a cover letter with ChatGPT – how it works, and where it ends
ChatGPT can deliver a usable cover letter if you give it the right input. Here is a prompt template to copy, a checklist for the result and an honest comparison with Pathly.
The template works in any AI chat, even without Pathly
Why ChatGPT cover letters often sound like AI
A language model writes from probabilities. When concrete information is missing it fills in with what appears most often: “I read your job posting with great interest”, lists of three and big words without evidence.
The problem is rarely the model but what you give it. The more concrete the job, the evidence and the style, the less boilerplate is left.
Prompt template: cover letter with ChatGPT
Replace everything in square brackets. The more real evidence you provide, the less the model invents.
You are an experienced career coach and copywriter. Write a cover letter in English, 200 to 300 words. JOB Title: [job title] Company: [name] Tasks and requirements: [paste the text from the posting] MY PROFILE [3 to 4 relevant roles, each with 1 to 2 concrete results, e.g. "cut onboarding time from 6 to 4 weeks"] REFERENCE TO THE COMPANY I noticed: [one concrete project, product or news item] MY STYLE [2 to 3 sentences from an earlier cover letter of yours] RULES - Open with the reference to the company, not with "I hereby apply". - Use only facts from my profile. Do not invent anything. - One piece of evidence per paragraph. No filler words like "team player" or "resilient". - Short sentences, 25 words at most. - End with a concrete offer to talk. If information is missing, ask me up to three questions first.
Tip: afterwards ask the model to back every statement with the matching role from your profile. What it cannot back up, you delete.
Checklist before you send the text
- Are all facts correct? Names, numbers, tools, time spans, company details.
- Did you keep something you would never say yourself? Then rephrase it.
- Does the text open with a stock phrase? Then delete it.
- Does every paragraph have evidence you can explain in the interview?
- Is the length right? One page is enough.
- Did you share personal data with the chat only as far as your training and storage settings allow?
ChatGPT or Pathly? A fair comparison
Both are AI tools. The difference is how much work the tool takes off you before the text is written.
| General AI chat (e.g. ChatGPT) | Pathly | |
|---|---|---|
| Job & requirements | You paste the posting yourself and say what matters. | The posting automatically becomes a profile with tasks, requirements and keywords. |
| Your evidence | You type or paste your profile again for every application. | Your stations live in your account. You pick the fitting ones per job. |
| Company reference | You research it and provide the reference. | Pathly researches and suggests hooks you choose from. |
| Writing style | Through your prompt instructions and style samples. | Learned from your earlier cover letters, tone via informal or formal. |
| Critique | You have to ask for it. | A recruiter simulation reviews the draft critically. |
| Management | No link to jobs or status. | Job, documents and status in one queue. |
For single applications a chat with a good template is perfectly enough. Pathly pays off mainly if you apply regularly and do not want to gather everything anew each time.
Frequently asked questions
May I use ChatGPT for my cover letter?
Yes, as long as the content is true and you take responsibility for it. More in the guide Using AI in applications: what is allowed?.
Do recruiters recognize ChatGPT texts?
Some do, especially with general texts that have no reference to the company. A text with concrete evidence and your own voice stands out less.
Is my data safe with ChatGPT?
That depends on your settings and plan. Check whether your input is used for training and only paste as much personal data as necessary.
What does Pathly do differently with data?
Pathly stores data in the EU and masks personal details before text goes to the AI. The AI providers process it under contract without storage and training.
